About the sentence

to go off

When we talk about alarms - alarm clocks, car alarms, fire alarms, and so on - we use this phrasal verb to mean that the alarm starts or makes a sound.

The continuous (a car alarm was going off) is used in this sentence to communicate the fact that the action happened over a period of time, instead of happening once or suddenly (a car alarm went off).

Write your answers to these questions in the comments section, and I'll get back to you with some feedback:

  • What time does your alarm go off in the morning?

  • When your alarm goes off, do you get up straight awayImmediately or do you press the snooze buttonThis is when you turn off the alarm for 5 or 10 minutes to have a little bit more sleep, also known as a snooze?

  • Have you ever been in a building when the fire alarm or smoke alarm went off? What happened?

My alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. and when it goes off, I wake up straight away. I’ve never been in a building when the fire alarm went off. Actually, I don’t even know if this kind of thing works very well around here.
